Systematic Review of Coaching Autistic College Students

As the number of programs for college students with autism increase, so does the variety of supports offered to students. To understand the current research base on supporting autistic college students, I am leading a team of direct service providers in conducting a systematic review of the literature.


Our research questions are:

  1. What theoretical frameworks for coaching students with autism in postsecondary education are identified in the research literature?

  2. What are the characteristics of the sample participants in the research literature for coaching autistic students in postsecondary education?

  3. What are the characteristics of the coaching programs studied?

  4. What outcomes of coaching students with autism in postsecondary education are identified in the research literature?

The team has just finished coding of the identified articles and we are working on compiling the results. We will then work as a team, and with some of the autistic students in our program to identify takeaways, strengths of the literature, implications for direct service providers, and areas of future research.
